The university supports the rights of students, faculty, staff, and visitors to engage in peaceful expressive activities while balancing the university's educational mission, campus operations, and the safety of the community.

Yes. Students may participate in peaceful demonstrations, rallies, vigils, tabling, leafleting, and other expressive activities in accordance with university policies and applicable time, place, and manner restrictions. Participants are expected to respect the rights of others and ensure their activities do not disrupt university operations.

It depends on the type of activity you are planning.

If your activity is an event as defined by the university’s Space Reservation Policy – you must reserve space through the appropriate university process.

However, not all freedom of expression activities are considered events. Individuals and groups may engage in spontaneous or informal expressive activities in areas of campus that are generally open without reserving space, provided the space is not already reserved, the activity complies with university policies and does not disrupt university operations, obstruct access, create safety concerns, or interfere with the rights of others.

As a public university, Mason is committed to protecting freedom of expression through fostering a respectful and inclusive campus environment. Community members are encouraged to engage respectfully, seek support when needed, and report conduct that may violate university policy.

The university may intervene when conduct violates university policy or the law, threatens the safety of the campus community, or disrupts university operations. The university is committed to facilitating expressive activities whenever possible while maintaining a safe and functional learning environment.
